Meet Our New Youth Director

426 days ago by Jenn Collins

We are very excited to announce our new youth coordinator at Oasis Church. She has been serving with our youth since 2007 and has been on staff with our church for many years. Katia Droira has taken on this new role as of January 1, 2009. She now oversees the youth ministry for all three of our campuses. Check out my interview with her below to get to know her better!

How long have you been a member of Oasis Church?

I’ve been coming to Oasis since Christmas 2001.

Tell us about your family.

My husband’s name is Jose. We grew up together and will be celebrating our 19th anniversary in a few days. Yay! We have two sons, Jordan and Joshua, of whom I am very proud! These three men keep everything exciting around the house. My pink world collided one day with blue and my life has never been the same since!

Where are you from?

I was born in Quito, Ecuador.

What is your favorite food?

I love empanadas, wheat bread and blueberries.

What is your favorite game?

Charades!

How long have you worked with our youth group?

As a youth leader, since 2007.

When did you first start to have a passion to reach teens?

I never thought of this until I started working with our teen ministry, but the day I received Christ into my life was the first time I stepped into a Christian church and guess what? It was youth night! I was so blown away by their fresh and passionate worship of our Savior that I couldn’t resist. I believe God really touched my heart right then.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

Agh! I have several! But one that has stayed with me since God was knocking at my heart’s door is “Be still and know that I am God”, Psalm 46:10. Another one is “Decide today whom you will serve…As for my family and me, we will serve the Lord,” Joshua 24:15. Actually I love the whole book of Joshua and well, the whole Bible!

What do you love most about our teens?

I love their uniqueness and that whenever I talk to one of them I know I am talking to a potential church leader, community leader and leader in their home. You hear so many people say that this generation is our future, and they are right. But we can’t wait for the future; we have to start pouring Christ’s love on them now. They are awesome right now! And if you are patient enough, behind so much coolness you will start to see God’s plan unveiling in their lives before your very eyes! I am witnessing that process even now with our teens. And it is only the tip of the iceberg!

What are some things you plan on doing in the coming year with our teens?

One of the most important things that I believe God is leading SURGE, besides studying God’s word in a fun atmosphere, is to take more opportunities to serve in our community and abroad. We are planning a great event called DiscipleNow, Summer camp with StudenLife, a missions trip to Ecuador and many other amazing things! I hope every teen in our ministry has a chance to experience being in and doing ministry with other teens at SURGE in 2009!
