What exactly is 'servant-leadership' and what does that have to do with teens?

Well, to all christians the definition of servant-leadership should bring to mind the life of Jesus here on earth. He’s the only human that was born to lead. He is the first and the last, the alpha and the omega. The rest of us, as His disciples, can only strive to be more like our Savior. But, since we were made in God’s image, we are wired in such a way that we will always influence or lead those around us -even if we don’t realize it.
This past Saturday, we learned that and more about leadership at Surge. About 14 teenagers showed up to our very first Student Leadership Workshop led by our very own ‘Pastor Mike’. Mike Chalk is the Host Pastor for our Saturday night 7Now service. Yes, his extensive resume qualifies him to lead a class in leadership. But more importantly, his life exemplifies the type of leadership that we Christians should be known for – a strong leadership full of love and compassion, something the world does not understand. He and his wife are foster parents of four children right now and are always ready to serve in any capacity at Oasis or even other ministries in the area. It is a great privilege to have him be a part of our church and a recent addition to our youth ministry here at Surge!
Now, how did these teenagers get to be invited to such an important workshop? Well, it was a tough decision… I would love for every single teen to be a part of it! And it’s my prayer that eventually everyone will! But, those who came have shown extraordinary potential for leadership in the past year or so by being, well, ‘servants at heart’. They are serving right now as student leaders for middle school bible studies and for our discussions after teaching on our youth night. They jump in whenever and wherever needed without ever asking anything in return. What’s more, they’ve come faithfully to their own bible study groups besides Thursday night. They hold the word of God dear to their hearts and are passionate about HIM! How awesome is that?!
I’m sharing some pics now of that amazing and gorgeous day! God’s agenda took place. He used Mike to share His wisdom and we all had lots of fun! I was just grateful to be in the middle of it. I pray that this group will grow by the next time we meet!
And now let me share it with you… click here to see pictures from our meeting!
