Pray for the Peace & Prosperity of the City

If you were with us last weekend for our first message of the New Year you heard the burden and vision of my heart for 2014-2015 and beyond. If you did not hear it, you can click on this link anytime and watch it. It’s a must see and if you don't watch it, you might be totally overwhelmed or shocked in the coming weeks ahead.

One of the passages I read was Jeremiah 29. It was written to the Jewish exiles from Jerusalem. God was challenging them though they were in foreign, even hostile enemy land to settle down, make the best of it and he ends the challenge to them by saying in Vs. 7, “and seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”

Yes, pray for the city of Detroit! Even if it’s not your city, even if it’s not the city you want to be in. “If you will pray for the peace and prosperity of it then when I answer your prayers and bless them you will also prosper.” That is one of the most unique promises in the entire Bible. Essentially God is saying that you might not like where you are, but if you will pray for the city, the people, and even your enemy to prosper, I will answer your prayer and you will also prosper. That is incredible and goes against everything that my human nature tells me.

Two of the 5 components of this year’s Mission Value goal are to seek the peace and prosperity of the city of Detroit and of Downtown Hollywood (if you didn’t hear the message you won’t understand this).

We must begin doing this right away. Will you begin to pray for Detroit and the churches and Christians there? Will you begin to pray for Downtown Hollywood and the beaches and the people there and that God will not only prosper her and give His blessings on her but that we will be a part of it. I believe God’s word and if He meant it for His people then I believe God still loves the cities of the US and the people in them, even if they are financially and morally bankrupt. That is why He saved us and called us and why Oasis has been given the Mission, "To Be and Make Disciples".
