"So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, 'On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.'" - Genesis 22:14
The Greatest Teacher of All
The Bible is a great source of hope and encouragement, and it also contains important life lessons. Some people have even broken down the word "Bible" into the acronym: "Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth". Throughout scripture, God can be seen as an instructor, teaching us His ways.
God is always willing to set the first example for anything He commands us to do.
When it comes to giving, God set the greatest example of all by sacrificing His one and only son on the cross (John 3:16). In God's Word, He regularly reminds us of the importance of generosity and giving back.
As the Bible says in Isaiah 55:8, God's ways are not our ways. His provision does not always come in monetary forms. Through serving, God desires to make us rich in friendships, overflowing in love and compassion, and full of purpose. God intends for us to have an "abundant life" (John 10:10b NKJV), a more-than-enough kind of life.
When we give, we aren't giving away... in reality, we're giving back to the Source of all things.
Nothing we own is ours; everything ultimately belongs to God (James 1:17). And by giving, there is still so much for us to gain (Acts 20:35).
Even for those who may be struggling to find ways to give, as Christmas approaches, consider the many areas God has blessed you in (i.e., faith, peace, and joy). From the overflow of what you have received, you can offer encouragement to those who are hurting.
What are some ways you can give back and be a blessing to others this holiday season?
God, teach me how to have a heart of generosity this Christmas. Teach me how to give of my time, my talents, and my treasures to those who are in need. When I tap into You, my Ultimate Source, You fill in any areas in which I lack. If I am overflowing in joy, show me how to pour out hope. If I am overflowing in compassion, show me to pour out encouragement. Let every act of love be for Your name and for Your glory.
